With “In Search of Humanity,” Kunsthal Rotterdam presents a large-scale exhibition by Ai Weiwei, one of today’s most prominent artists and a vocal critic of authoritarian power systems. This exhibition is his most comprehensive retrospective to date, showcasing an impressive array of works, including paintings, cultural ready-mades, LEGO sculptures, installations, photography, and video works. It provides an extensive overview of Ai Weiwei’s over-four-decades-spanning career and features key pieces from all his creative periods. The exhibition was a resounding success, attracting more than 270,000 visitors over five months.
Our studio had the honor of designing the graphical layer for this exhibition, allowing us to delve deep into Ai Weiwei’s remarkable career and his quest for a better world. We strategically integrated the exhibition space’s vistas, ensuring the exhibition’s logo remained visible throughout, offering viewers a cohesive journey. Every detail was meticulously crafted to enhance the overall visual narrative. We chose a royal blue color scheme, reflecting the historical connection between The Netherlands and China through white-blue porcelain. This color palette was primarily used in the typographical layer, featuring bold type for names and dates, and a sharp, edgy modern type for the reading texts. This thoughtful design approach ensured that the visual experience was as compelling as the artwork itself, creating an immersive and memorable exhibition for all visitors.
